Founded in 2021, the research group “Computational Methods in Modeling and Analysis of Learning Processes” (COLAPS) is one of the 13 scientific fields at the Department of Human-centered Computing and Cognitive Science (HCCS), Faculty of Computer Science, University of Duisburg-Essen.
Our mission is to conduct innovative research on the integration of artificial intelligence and data analytics in education with the aim to model how people learn and to foster transformative learning experiences. By bridging cutting-edge technology with pedagogy following human-centered designs, we strive to empower learners, educators, and institutions to achieve their full potential.
We envision a future where we can use technological advancements to support education in terms of personalization, adaptation, and impact. Through our research, we aim to creating intelligent learning environments that empower learners from diverse backgrounds, support educators in innovative ways, and transform educational ecosystems while prioritizing human agency, and autonomy. Our ultimate goal is to inspire lifelong learning and ensure that education keeps pace with the demands of a dynamic, technology-driven society.
We believe that “education should be accessible, inclusive, and equitable for all” [Council of Europe], and that “education is a basic human right” [UNESCO].
