As another year goes by, our research group gathered for a memorable retreat in Saarbrücken—a two-days trip that offered academic exchange and moments of genuine connection.
The highlight of our visit was the time spent with colleagues at Saarland University, Tomo Nagashima (LaLa Lab) and Armin Weinberger (EduTech) and members of their groups, sharing our ongoing research projects and gaining perspectives on the work unfolding across our extended research community. There’s something uniquely energizing about stepping outside our usual environment to discover the innovative directions our colleagues are pursuing. Beyond inspiring discussions, we embraced the opportunity to experience Saarbrücken itself. The city welcomed us with its festive charm—we savored authentic Flammkuchen, and wandered through the Christmas market.
As we find ourselves at this annual threshold, the retreat offered more than professional development—it became a space for reflection. Looking back on the year, we’re filled with gratitude for the opportunities we’ve had, the collaborations we’ve nurtured, and the supportive community that surrounds our work. The goodness we’ve experienced—in breakthroughs large and small, in collegial support during challenges, in the simple pleasure of shared meals and conversations—deserves recognition and appreciation.
This retreat reminded us that the best academic communities are built on more than shared research interests. They’re sustained by genuine curiosity about each other’s work, willingness to step outside our comfort zones, and the time we carve out to truly connect. Cheers to a happy and prosperous 2026!
