Human-Centered Design Approaches for Using Artificial Intelligence to Support Teaching and Learning – Talk Lehre 2025 RWTH
University of Duisburg-Essen
This year, the colaps research group participates in the event Talk Lehre 2025: AI in Teaching and Learning at RWTH Aachen University. The event aims to bring together faculty and students to explore the current state of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning, spark meaningful conversations, offer fresh insights, and provide a space to discuss and develop new ideas.
During the event, we will contribute to three activities: a world café, an expert talk and an interactive workshop. Below you can find more information about the activities we have prepared and useful materials.
World Café
The topic we will discuss during the World Café is the use of AI in Teaching: what opportunities does AI bring for teachers and what challenges teachers face from AI integration and use in the classroom?
In particular, we will focus on four prominent uses of AI for teaching:
- Creation and adaptation of teaching materials: AI provides the possibility to generate texts, images and videos, to support in authoring presentations and learning activities, to retrieve relevant resources from educational repositories and to translate them in any language or repurpose them to serve a specific purpose. Who owns authorship of these materials, who has the responsibility for the information that appears there and who can ensure that these materials reflect the priorities of the relevant curricula?
- Learning about learning: Learning Analytics, that is, computational approaches for analyzing learner’s trace data and understanding how people learn, and what struggles they encounter, make use of AI algorithms to identify trends or patterns in learners’ data. Who is permitted to collect these data, how are they transformed into knowledge about learning, how is that knowledge used?
- Automated assessment and feedback: Using AI to automatically assess learners’ assignments and to provide real-time feedback for summative or formative evaluation purposes with the aim to “save teachers’ time”. What impact such approaches might have on the quality of teaching and learning, how do we ensure fairness and who should be held accountable if the assessment “fails”? What is the impact on the teacher-learner mentoring relationship?
- Personalized and adaptive learning environments: AI plays a central role in personalized and adaptive learning environments by analyzing learner data to tailor content, pace, and feedback to individual needs. It enables real-time adaptation based on performance, preferences, and engagement, helping learners progress more effectively. AI-driven tools, such as intelligent tutors and recommendation systems, provide customized support and resources, while generative AI enhances interactivity through natural language dialogue. Ethical use, transparency, and data privacy are essential to ensure trust and fairness. When designed responsibly, AI significantly enhances the flexibility and responsiveness of digital learning experiences.

Expert Talk
Prof. Dr. Chounta will give a talk about the use of AI in Education. In particular, she will discuss the premises of Intelligent Tutoring Systems and Intelligent Learning Environments for teaching and learning and demonstrate examples from her research and practice. Finally, she will reflect on theoretical and practical implications of the use of artificial intelligence in education for personalization and adaptation from the lens of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

Workshop
You are a teacher. If you could have any superpowers you wanted, to help you do your job, what would they be?
Our workshop will focus on human-centered approaches for using AI to support teaching and learning. In particular, we want to gain insight regarding teachers’ expectations when using AI for teaching and learning, and to identify challenges and opportunities. We will discuss best practices, ethical considerations, and real-world use cases, aiming to delivering practical strategies for AI integration into learning practice.
